Aid Trucks Stranded as Gaza Blockade Enters Third Month
As Israel’s total blockade on the Gaza Strip enters its third month, the humanitarian situation has reached a breaking point. Thousands of trucks loaded with desperately needed food, clean water, and medical supplies are stuck at border crossings, unable to reach the more than two million Palestinians trapped inside the war-torn enclave.
According to the United Nations and aid agencies on the ground, at least 3,000 trucks are currently lined up at the Rafah border crossing with Egypt. These trucks are packed with life-saving resources that have been approved for delivery by humanitarian organizations, but due to military restrictions and logistical obstacles, they have been unable to enter Gaza.
Inside Gaza, the consequences of the blockade are devastating. Hospitals are struggling to function with dwindling supplies of medicine and fuel. Food is scarce, and access to clean water is almost nonexistent. Aid workers have reported scenes of desperation—families searching through garbage for scraps to feed their children, and the sick going without essential treatment.
Tragically, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) reports that at least 57 people have died of starvation in recent weeks, including children and vulnerable elderly individuals. Human rights organizations warn that this figure is likely to grow if aid continues to be blocked.
Philippe Lazzarini, the commissioner-general of UNRWA, emphasized that the aid has been vetted and cleared, but “what is lacking is the political will to allow this aid to enter Gaza and reach those in need.” He added that the situation is “not a logistical failure, it is a man-made disaster.”
The international community has expressed growing concern over the use of starvation as a method of warfare. Under international humanitarian law, such actions may constitute war crimes. The United Nations has called for immediate and unconditional access to Gaza for humanitarian agencies.
As the crisis deepens, pressure is mounting on global leaders to intervene and facilitate the safe passage of humanitarian aid. Without urgent action, the people of Gaza face an even more catastrophic humanitarian collapse.
