Celebrations and Disappointments Follow NRM Tribunal Ruling
The atmosphere at the NRM Electoral Disputes Tribunal offices on Kyadondo Road, Kampala, was charged with emotion as verdicts from election petitions were handed down.
Some petitioners celebrated their successes with cheers, while others left silently, holding back tears over unfavorable rulings.
Candidates and their supporters gathered to collect verdicts, with some sending legal representatives to receive decisions on their behalf.
A visibly disappointed petitioner was overheard requesting not to have their picture taken, highlighting the emotional toll of the process.
Among the notable verdicts, Lieutenant General Henry Tumukunde’s victory was upheld after the tribunal dismissed challenges regarding his political affiliation.
Tumukunde secured a decisive win with 4,542 votes against Isaac Atukunda’s 1,646.
Other significant wins confirmed include Sarah Babirye Kityo of Bukoto East, James Waluswaka of Butaleja, Simon Longoli of Chekwii-Kadama, Ricky Richard Anywar of Agago West, Miriam Wangisi Mukhaye for Mbale Woman MP, and Harriet Wembabazi for Hoima Woman MP.
The tribunal handled an average of 56 petitions daily, issuing 46 verdicts on the day in question. Some delays occurred due to the consolidation of cases, with remaining petitioners being notified electronically.
To manage the workload and reduce delays, the tribunal increased staff and expedited printing of physical verdict documents, which were made available to petitioners attending in person.
