Museveni Accepts Ruto Challenge, Promises Cranes Shs1.2b per Win
President Museveni meets the Uganda Cranes in a past engagement.
President Yoweri Museveni has responded to Kenyan President William Ruto’s recent football incentive with a bold counter-offer—pledging Shs1.2 billion for each match the Uganda Cranes win at CHAN 2024.
Presidential Stakes Raised
The CHAN 2024 tournament has taken on a new level of regional rivalry, not just on the pitch but from the highest offices. Museveni’s declaration came shortly after Ruto announced billions in bonus packages for Kenya’s Harambee Stars.
“If Ruto is challenging his team with billions, I can’t let our boys go in empty-handed,” Museveni reportedly said during a briefing with officials from FUFA. “Let every victory speak for the flag—and their pockets.”
Motivation Meets Expectation
The pledge has ignited excitement across sports circles and social media in Uganda. Supporters and players alike see it as a morale boost ahead of the Cranes’ next clash in the tournament. Uganda is currently looking to bounce back after a 3–0 defeat to Algeria in their opening match.
According to insiders, the funds will be disbursed immediately after each win, with the money shared among players, technical staff, and support personnel.
Regional Football Diplomacy?
While largely symbolic, the financial showmanship between the two East African leaders reflects a growing regional focus on football diplomacy. With both Kenya and Uganda involved in hosting duties for CHAN 2024, their rivalry is now both athletic and political.
“This is healthy competition,” said a FUFA spokesperson. “If our neighbors are raising their game, we must meet them there—not just on the pitch but in investment too.”
As Uganda prepares for its next match against Guinea, the promise of Shs1.2 billion per win now adds weight to each kick, each pass, and every goal.
