Nation Prays for Rhoda Kalema Ahead of Burial
The country is mourning the loss of Rhoda Nsibirwa Kalema, affectionately known as the “Mother of Parliament,” as preparations for her burial are underway at her ancestral home in Kiboga District.
Kalema played a pivotal role in the restoration and coronation of the Buganda Kingdom in 1993, an achievement that has cemented her legacy in Uganda’s political and cultural history. During a recent memorial service, the Kabaka’s representative, Mr. Mugumbule, and the Kingdom Premier, Mr. Charles Peter Mayiga, paid homage to her tireless contributions in advancing education, health, politics, and the empowerment of women and girls across the nation.
Former Ethics Minister Miria Matembe, who attended the ceremony, lauded Kalema’s mental acuity and passion for advocacy despite her advanced age. Matembe noted that Kalema remained deeply engaged in championing women’s and girls’ rights up until her final days.
Various leaders and members of the public have joined in prayer and reflection, honoring a life dedicated to service and social justice. Kalema’s impact on Uganda’s legislative and social landscape has inspired generations of women leaders to pursue their ambitions with courage and determination.
The burial ceremony promises to be a significant event, drawing dignitaries, family, and citizens alike to celebrate the remarkable life of a woman who shaped the course of Uganda’s history through resilience and unwavering commitment to her people.
